Oliver's Legacy - Support for Mental Health
Oliver’s Fund was established in 2003 in memory of Oliver Zlonis who graduated from Mahtomedi High School in 2002. Oliver was 19 when he died of suicide. In 2007, fund guidelines were finalized and the grant application process and the yearly grant cycle set. Grants from the fund will be awarded each year in early October.
For the 2009-2010 school year, Oliver’s Fund is pleased to make the following awards totaling $3,062.50 :

Anne Erickson, licensed school counselor at the high school received $1,137.50 to continue the coordinated depression awareness/suicide prevention program she runs each year with Corey Ratzloff in the10th grade health classes.

Heidi Springborg and Angie Buckingham on behalf of students and staff at the Mahtomedi Learning Center will receive $1,275 for a project called “Enhancing Personal, Social and Academic Success through Stress Identification and Management” led by Lora Matz, MS LICSW.

Middle school teachers Kathy Cichosz and Claudine Goodrich received a grant of $650 for a CLIMB theater production to the 7th grade class entitled "Cliques and Exclusion".
Adolescence is a particularly stressful time. For young people ages 15-24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. If parents have concerns about their child’s mood or behavior, they are urged to trust their instincts and not delay seeking help.
