Fall 2023-2024 MAEF GRANT RECIPIENTS

O.H. Anderson Elementary - Advanced Math Learning Opportunities

A MAEF Grant was awarded for advanced math learning opportunities for 3rd-5th grade students. Hands-On Equations is a research-based supplementary program that provides students with a concrete foundation for algebra. The hands-on, game-like approach to math engages students and reinforces math concepts at a deep kinesthetic level. It provides students with a strong foundation for later algebraic studies. This mathematics extension supports the strategic plan in many areas, but most notably in the strategy of building student agency through exceptional learning experiences.

O.H. Anderson Elementary - Music Education

Thanks to a MAEF Grant, students at O.H. Anderson Elementary will now have the opportunity to learn how to play the ukulele.  Ukuleles have become a foundational instrument for music education.  The benefit of instruction on this instrument is that its size allows for easier access for younger students.  With ukulele instruction beginning in 3rd grade, this will better prepare students for their 4th grade introduction to the recorder. Most importantly, it will enhance our guitar instruction in 5th grade bringing a greater level of success.  This should allow for a higher level of instruction at the middle school in every music class including band and choir.

O.H. Anderson Elementary - C-pen Readers

A MAEF Grant was awarded to the Occupational Therapist at O.H. Anderson to pilot test using C-pen Readers in the classrooms.  The C-pen Reader is an assistive technology device that can remove barriers of reading difficulties and empower all students to learn, grow, and have their voices be heard. The C-pen Reader is an easy-to-use, small, hand-held device that is used by the student to scan text, and it reads the text aloud to them.  This device will repeat the text to the student as many times as needed. The C-pen Reader can also provide definitions of words. The C-pen Readers will allow students to access their curriculum, regardless of a students’ reading skills.

Mahtomedi Middle School - Knowledge Bowl

A MAEF grant for additional equipment, competition registration, and bussing assistance was awarded to the Advanced Academics Coordinator to increase capacity for the Middle School Knowledge Bowl Program. Knowledge Bowl is a fast-paced Jeopardy-like academic competition in which teams of students work together to answer questions about history, literature, mathematics, science, current events, and other topics. Knowledge Bowl students apply creative thinking, improve recall, develop interpersonal skills, and learn to communicate and collaborate effectively. Knowledge Bowl supports the District’s strategic plan by building student agency through exceptional learning experiences.
